Transplantation: Taking #Moringa seedlings to the Field

Previously we have discussed Commercial Farming: Moringa: Stage 1: Land identification, Stage 2: Business Planning, Stage 3: Pre-Plantation (Seeds sourcing and Nursery raising) and Part 1& Part 2. Now nursery is ready, we shall go to next important stage Transplantation: Taking seedlings to the Field

The planting of perennial Moringa crop for plantation for seed oil production is considered to be a “high specialty “ farming operation that can produce reliable crop of quantified and oil-rich seeds per harvest each year, it’s no wonder the MOMAX3 Moringa Seed is a popular choice for Moringa oil project developers. Creating Quality saplings through Nursery and their successful transplantation in the field is an important aspect of a successful Plantation.

What are the best conditions for transplanting Moringa Saplings?

Preparing to Transplant

Essential factors which will determine efficacy of perennial Moringa plantation are as follows:

· Growing climate

· Weather conditions at the time of transplanting

· Grower’s knowledge about farm practices

· Soil Preparation/Farm designing/holes preparation

· Availability of Growing Media & Prevent Biological Measure

· Availability of irrigation system

· Ready-to-transplant saplings

PLANTATION -PROCESS

The two most important factors for insuring a healthy plant:

1. Planting at the proper depth. Never bury the trunk with soil or mulch.

2. Maintaining an even and deep level of moisture.

SITE PREPARATION

Proper site preparation is essential to your plant planting operation, and varies with the different climates and soil types.

Pit -Preparation

1. Land levelling and soil preparation be ensured

2. Planting pattern of 2m x 3m OR 2m x 2m be adopted

3. Pit size 45x45x45 CM or 60x60x60 CM as the case may be

It is important to make the hole wide because the roots on the newly establishing Moringa tree must push through surrounding soil in order to establish. On most planting sites in new developments, the existing soils have been compacted and are unsuitable for healthy root growth. Breaking up the soil in a large area around the Moringa tree provides the newly emerging roots room to expand into loose soil to hasten establishment.

Transplanting Seedlings: Taking It to The Field:

Transplanting is what you do when your seeds have established an adequate rooting system to sustain them and you need to move them to a larger site where they can grow on for a longer and productive life span

When you are transplanting seedlings, your goal is to create optimum conditions for each plant’s first few days in the field. The goal is for seedlings to suffer as little transplant shock as possible, as they move to the field. Transplants planted into the field will experience some level of transplant shock. To get plants growing as soon as possible. Key to minimizing transplant shock is starting with transplants that are well watered and supplying more water immediately after transplanting.

How and When take the Nursery plants to field and place in the hole, all instructions step-by-step have been laid down in guide booklet
